Jordan, Egypt consent enhancing cross-border electricity capacity to 2,000MW
(MENAFN) Jordan and Egypt have reached an agreement to increase their electricity interconnection capacity to 2,000 megawatts, enhancing regional energy cooperation, Minister Yarub Qudah said. The deal also supports ongoing trilateral energy collaboration with Iraq.
Currently, a 13-kilometre, 400-kilovolt submarine cable across the Gulf of Aqaba transmits 500 MW between the two countries. The new capacity forms part of the Eight-Country Interconnection Project, linking Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Libya, and Turkey.
A joint technical committee will meet later this year to address transport and labor matters. Qudah highlighted that Jordanian-Egyptian trade grew over 30% in 2024, with exports from Jordan to Egypt rising by the same rate, underscoring expanding opportunities for Jordanian businesses.
The agreement coincided with the signing of nine cooperation deals in sectors including industry, economy, local development, tourism, and energy during the 33rd session of the Jordanian-Egyptian Higher Committee in Amman, co-chaired by Prime Ministers Jafar Hassan and Mostafa Madbouly.
