Spain Invokes Civil Protection Emergency Amid Extensive Wildfires
(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Tuesday that his government will invoke a civil protection emergency due to the extensive wildfires currently devastating large parts of the country.
Speaking at a firefighting command center in Caceres, located in southwest Spain and among the hardest-hit areas along with Galicia and Castilla-Leon in the northwest, Sanchez described the crisis as "a calamity" and vowed comprehensive government support, including compensation for those affected by the fires.
Data from the European Forest Fire Information System reveals that over 382,000 hectares have been consumed by flames across Spain in 2025, with more than 300,000 hectares lost in just the last two weeks.
Regional emergency officials confirmed four fatalities this month, and more than 30,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes.
Sanchez emphasized that tackling climate change is critical to addressing this growing threat. "We cannot limit ourselves to reacting when fires start. We must prepare the ground so that when they break out, the damage is reduced," he said.
