Putin Updates Ramaphosa on Alaska Summit

Date:

(MENAFN) Russian leader Vladimir Putin has briefed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on the “main outcomes” of recent high-level discussions held in Alaska, according to a statement from the Kremlin.

Putin and US President Donald Trump convened in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday for their first direct meeting since tensions heightened over the Ukraine situation in 2022.

The gathering was part of continuing efforts to address the conflict diplomatically. Trump referred to the talks as “warm,” while Putin characterized them as “frank” and “substantive.”

In a release issued Monday, the Kremlin reported that Putin and Ramaphosa held a phone conversation to exchange views on “the Russia–US top-level talks,” though the statement did not provide specific information about the conversation’s contents.

During the call, Ramaphosa conveyed his backing for the sustained diplomatic initiatives aimed at reaching a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, the Kremlin added.

South Africa has continued to adopt a non-aligned position on the Ukraine conflict, resisting calls from Western nations to denounce Moscow.

Ramaphosa has championed broad-based peace discussions and previously led a group of African heads of state to Kiev and St. Petersburg in June 2023 to promote a ceasefire.

Earlier this month, Putin had also informed Ramaphosa of the outcomes of separate discussions with US special envoy Steve Witkoff, reiterating his gratitude for the African-led peace efforts.
