(MENAFN) Reports describe the Kaleta Hydropower Station on the Konkoure River in central Guinea as a symbol of successful energy cooperation between China and Guinea. The station, visible from the Fouta Djallon highlands, now supplies reliable electricity to the national capital, Conakry, as well as to surrounding northern villages. The facility is even featured on Guinea’s 20,000-franc banknote, illustrating the dramatic improvement from a decade ago.

Previously, Conakry’s nights were dominated by the noise of diesel generators, despite Guinea’s reputation as the "Water Tower" of West Africa. More than 70 percent of the country’s electricity relied on costly and polluting fuel oil, and frequent outages hindered economic growth.

"Before Kaleta Hydropower Station was built, power outages were common in our community. We experienced them almost daily, sometimes lasting for hours," recalled Alhassane Bangoura, a local translator who worked on the project.

In August 2015, the station began full operations under the construction of China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE), a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company Limited.
