Brazil's Supreme Federal Court select its next chief justice
(MENAFN) Reports indicate that Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court elected Edson Fachin as its next chief justice on Wednesday, succeeding Luis Roberto Barroso.
In the symbolic vote, Fachin received 10 out of 11 possible votes. Alexandre de Moraes was chosen as his deputy with the same tally, following the court’s tradition that no justice votes for themselves.
Fachin, who joined the court in 2015 after being nominated by then-President Dilma Rousseff, said he assumes the position with "a sense of mission" and a commitment to dialogue and collegiality. He will officially take office on September 29 and will also head the National Council of Justice, which oversees the judiciary.
Moraes, who was sanctioned under the U.S. Magnitsky Act for his involvement in the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro over an alleged coup attempt, described the appointment as "an honor and a joy."
