Top US, Russian diplomats communicate by phone before Alaska summit

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by phone with US counterpart Marco Rubio on Tuesday, just days before the scheduled summit between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, Moscow reported.

The diplomats discussed “certain aspects” of the upcoming meeting and confirmed that both sides seek a successful outcome, according to a Russian ministry statement. No additional details were provided, and the US State Department has not commented.

The Alaska summit on August 15 will mark the first in-person meeting between Putin and Trump since the US president took office in January. The leaders are expected to discuss a potential resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and a range of bilateral issues.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Russia views the summit as an opportunity to repair strained relations and address longstanding disputes. Moscow hopes the talks will “give an impulse to the normalization of bilateral relations” and allow progress on several fronts.

Trump described the meeting as a “feel-out” session aimed at exploring whether the Ukraine conflict can be resolved. He also highlighted the potential for increased trade with Russia, noting its “valuable land” and “tremendous potential” for economic cooperation.
