Estonia Expels Russian Diplomat Accused of Undermining Nation’s Stability
(MENAFN) Estonia took decisive action on Wednesday by expelling a Russian diplomat, accusing him of efforts aimed at destabilizing the country’s constitutional framework, legal system, and social harmony. The Estonian Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian Embassy’s charge d’affaires in Tallinn, issuing a diplomatic note that declared the embassy’s first secretary persona non grata.
According to a public broadcaster, the expelled diplomat has been ordered to leave the country immediately.
The Foreign Ministry emphasized that Estonia “will not tolerate Russia's activities against our constitutional order and internal stability” and highlighted the importance of delivering a clear message on the matter. Additionally, Tallinn confirmed plans to inform its international partners and allies about the expulsion.
In a statement, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna charged the expelled diplomat with actively participating in efforts to undermine Estonia's constitutional order and legal framework, as well as sowing division within Estonian society. Tsahkna also claimed that the diplomat had played a role in criminal activities, including sanctions violations.
“At present, one citizen of the Republic of Estonia has been convicted for carrying out these crimes,” Tsahkna added
He emphasized that Estonia’s position is firm: “The Russian embassy's ongoing interference in the internal affairs of the Republic of Estonia must end, and by expelling the diplomat, we are demonstrating that Estonia will not allow any actions orchestrated and organized by a foreign state on its territory.”
