Trump Plans Hosting Peace Talks with Azerbaijan, Armenia
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump is set to convene peace discussions this week in Washington, bringing together Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, and Nikol Pashinyan, the prime minister of Armenia.
The meeting was verified on Wednesday by Pashinyan’s press secretary, Nazeli Baghdasaryan, via Facebook.
She noted that the Armenian leader will travel to the US on Thursday and Friday, where he will hold a bilateral session with the US president during his stay in Washington.
Baghdasaryan stated that the trilateral dialogue aims to “promote peace, prosperity, and economic cooperation in the region.”
Her announcement comes after an earlier article from a news outlet revealed that Trump plans to receive the two heads of state at the White House on Friday, citing information from two senior officials within the White House.
The article also pointed out the potential for a peace accord to be unveiled following the negotiations between the neighbors from the South Caucasus.
At this time, Azerbaijani representatives have not immediately responded to Armenia's declaration or the news report.
Aliyev and Pashinyan last convened in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, last month.
During that meeting, they discussed initiatives to normalize diplomatic relations and agreed to persist with negotiations and measures to build mutual trust.
In the same month, Trump mentioned during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office that efforts to establish a peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan seem to be approaching a “successful conclusion.”
