Moscow states Israeli settlers assaulted Russian diplomats
(MENAFN) Last week, Russian diplomats’ vehicle was attacked by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, causing mechanical damage, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reported on Tuesday. She condemned the incident as a breach of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
The attack took place on July 30 near the unauthorized Israeli settlement of Giv'at Asaf, east of Ramallah and roughly 20 kilometers north of Jerusalem. Zakharova stated that the settlers also shouted threats at the diplomats, criticizing the Israeli military for failing to intervene. She called the lack of action by Israeli Defense Forces “particularly puzzling.”
The vehicle belonged to Russia’s diplomatic mission to the Palestinian Authority, which also holds accreditation with Israel’s Foreign Ministry. Moscow’s embassy in Tel Aviv has officially protested the incident to Israeli authorities.
In related remarks, the Kremlin reiterated its longstanding support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. This position dates back to 1988 when the Soviet Union recognized Palestinian independence.
The comments come amid the ongoing Gaza conflict, which erupted in October 2023 following a Hamas attack on southern Israel, resulting in about 1,200 Israeli deaths. Israel’s military operations in Gaza have since caused over 59,000 Palestinian fatalities, drawing widespread international condemnation for the humanitarian impact.
