Switzerland Seeks Better Trade Terms with US
(MENAFN) The Swiss administration announced on Monday its readiness to propose a "more attractive offer" during its trade discussions with the United States, choosing not to implement any retaliatory measures.
According to a formal declaration from the Federal Council, the country will proceed with talks after Washington's decision to impose a steeper 39% duty on goods imported from Switzerland.
The Swiss leadership emphasized its intention to ensure equitable treatment in comparison with major international competitors, aiming to maintain advantageous conditions for its national economy.
"The Federal Council is determined to pursue discussions with the United States beyond the current joint statement proposal and, if necessary, beyond the 7 August deadline," the announcement read.
By engaging with Swiss industry representatives, the Council has formulated updated strategies to strengthen its negotiation position.
The administration affirmed that discussions would continue in hopes of achieving a trade accord.
"Switzerland enters this new phase ready to present a more attractive offer, taking US concerns into account and seeking to ease the current tariff situation," the statement further added.
Over the last two decades, commercial exchanges between the two nations have multiplied by four. Switzerland now ranks as the sixth-largest foreign investor in the United States.
"The Federal Council is keen to preserve and build on these dynamic ties," it concluded, as reported by a news agency.
