U.S. Imposes New Sanctions on PLO, Palestinian Authority
(MENAFN) The United States on Thursday announced new sanctions against the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA), citing repeated breaches of their obligations and actions that jeopardize Middle East peace efforts.
"It is in our national security interests to impose consequences and hold the PLO and PA accountable for not complying with their commitments and undermining the prospects for peace," stated the U.S. State Department.
According to the department, a formal report has been submitted to Congress asserting that both the PLO and PA have contravened the PLO Commitments Compliance Act of 1989 and the Middle East Peace Commitments Act (MEPCA) of 2002 on several counts.
The alleged infractions include endorsing activities in international forums that "contradict" United Nations Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338. The State Department also pointed to the groups’ involvement in legal proceedings at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which it says aim to "internationalize its conflict with Israel," as well as ongoing "support for terrorism" through "incitement and glorification of violence."
"The United States is imposing sanctions that deny visas to PLO members and PA officials in accordance with section 604(a)(1) of the MEPCA,” the department added.
