Ethiopia Dismisses US Funding Claims
(MENAFN) Ethiopia has dismissed assertions made by US President Donald Trump, who claimed that Washington financially supported the multibillion-dollar hydropower dam constructed on the Blue Nile.
The East African nation labeled these allegations as inaccurate and “destructive.”
During a White House dinner with Republican senators last Friday, Trump repeatedly stated that Ethiopia built the contentious Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) “largely” with US funds.
He remarked, “It doesn’t allow much water going into the Nile River. So you can imagine Egypt’s not thrilled because, they live off the Nile River.”
Furthermore, the president posted on his Truth Social platform last month, stating that the “massive” dam was “stupidly financed” by the US and “substantially reduces the water flowing” into the Nile River.
In response, Fikrte Tamir, deputy director of the GERD Coordination Office, informed reporters on Tuesday that the project was completed “without any foreign aid.”
She explained that the dam’s 14-year construction was fully funded through national government resources and public donations, including salary deductions and contributions from Ethiopians living abroad.
Regarding President Trump’s statements, Fikrte emphasized that the Ethiopian government should react in a diplomatic and prudent manner.
