(MENAFN) Cambodia and Thailand addressed the United Nations Security Council on Friday amid escalating border clashes, with Cambodia demanding an unconditional ceasefire and Thailand calling for an end to hostilities and a return to negotiations.

Cambodia’s UN ambassador, Chhea Keo, urged for an immediate halt to fighting with Thailand following recent violent encounters along their shared border.

“Cambodia asked for an immediate ceasefire -- unconditionally -- and we also call for the peaceful solution of the (border) dispute,” Chhea Keo told reporters after a closed-door Security Council session.

This emergency meeting was convened at the request of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to address the rising tensions.

Thailand’s ambassador to the UN, Cherdchai Chaivaivid, reaffirmed Thailand’s firm rejection of force as a means to settle international conflicts and stressed the country’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully in line with the UN Charter, according to the Thai Foreign Ministry.

Cherdchai highlighted that Thailand has made consistent efforts over the past two months to engage Cambodia through various bilateral channels. However, he accused Cambodia of avoiding meaningful negotiations and instead attempting to internationalize the conflict for political gain.

"Thailand urges Cambodia to immediately cease all hostilities and acts of aggression, and resume dialogue in good faith," Cherdchai stated.
