Eastern Europe Continues to Battle Scorching Heat, Wildfires
(MENAFN) Eastern Europe continues to face relentless high temperatures and widespread wildfires this Wednesday, following several weeks of unprecedented heat across the continent.
Countries including Greece, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Albania, and North Macedonia are struggling with intense heat and fire outbreaks. In contrast, Western European nations such as France, the UK, Spain, and Denmark are starting to see the heat wave subside, replaced by cooler, rainy conditions.
The North Macedonia Crisis Management Center (CUK) reported on Facebook Wednesday that 37 wildfires were recorded, with five still burning.
Albania recorded 22 wildfires in the past 24 hours, of which 11 remain active, a public broadcaster confirmed.
In Croatia, wildfires have flared in several regions over the last two days, and high temperatures are forecast to persist until Friday, according to another public broadcaster.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Federal Meteorological Institute issued orange and yellow warnings nationwide as temperatures are expected to near 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
Serbia is preparing for a heat peak of around 40°C (104°F) on Friday and Saturday, a broadcaster reported.
Beyond Eastern Europe, Finland and Sweden are also contending with unusually warm conditions.
Finland’s Meteorological Institute (FMI) forecasted tropical nights with temperatures staying above 20°C (68°F) on Thursday and Friday, as reported by a public broadcaster.
The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) issued an orange alert ahead of temperatures surpassing 30°C (86°F).
Meanwhile, France, Spain, and the UK have seen the heat wave break, replaced by cooler temperatures and rainfall.
Spain’s meteorological agency Aemet raised orange and red alerts in parts of the country due to heavy rain and storm threats.
Denmark has experienced significant rainfall over the last 24 hours, according to public broadcaster DR.
