Russia Approves Military Deal with Togo
(MENAFN) The Russian government has given its approval to a draft law aimed at formalizing a military cooperation treaty with Togo, according to a news agency, which cited official meeting documents on Tuesday.
This move by the government commission responsible for legislative matters reflects Moscow’s efforts to strengthen defense partnerships in West Africa, a region where French influence has diminished over recent years.
The agreement encompasses collaborative military training programs and joint exercises, Vladimir Gruzdev—a commission member and chairman of the Board of the Association of Lawyers of Russia—told the news agency.
Gruzdev further explained that the pact includes provisions for emergency medical aid between the armed forces of Russia and Togo.
He characterized Togo as a strategically significant ally, highlighting it as the most “organized and equipped” nation within Tropical Africa.
He added, “For example, the busiest seaport in the West African region is located on its territory.”
In recent years, Moscow has intensified its military involvement in Africa, with President Vladimir Putin stating last November that numerous countries across the continent are increasingly turning to Russia for security assistance.
