Trump’s announces “massive” breakthrough trade deal with Japan
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a major trade agreement with Japan, calling it a “massive” breakthrough between the two countries. The announcement was made Tuesday via his social media platform, where Trump described the deal as potentially “the largest Deal ever made.”
According to his statement, Japan will direct an estimated $550 billion into investments across the United States, with America retaining 90% of the profits. Trump stated that the agreement would lead to the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs and would significantly open up Japanese markets to American exports, including vehicles, rice, trucks, and agricultural goods.
“Japan will pay Reciprocal Tariffs to the United States of 15%,” Trump wrote, emphasizing the economic benefits to the U.S. He added, “This is a very exciting time for the United States of America, and especially for the fact that we will continue to always have a great relationship with the Country of Japan.”
As reported, Japan’s chief tariff negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, held discussions at the White House earlier that day. He also reportedly met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Later, while speaking to a gathering of Republican lawmakers at the White House, Trump referred to the new pact as "the largest trade deal in history" and confirmed plans for a second agreement involving liquefied natural gas (LNG).
“I said to the Japanese trade representatives, and these were the top people... We concluded the one deal and now we're going to conclude another one because they're forming a joint venture with us in Alaska for the LNG,” he said.
Looking ahead, Trump hinted that additional trade discussions with European and other international leaders are already underway. “We have Europe coming in tomorrow and the next day, and we have some other ones coming in,” he noted.
