Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever kills thirty civilians in Iraq

(MENAFN) The number of deaths linked to Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Iraq has reached 30, with health officials confirming 231 cases across the country since the start of the year, according to reports from the Iraqi Health Ministry.

A ministry spokesperson stated that Dhi Qar Province in the south has been the hardest hit, registering 84 infections and four deaths. Baghdad follows with 38 confirmed cases and six fatalities.

These updated figures show a sharp rise compared to the health ministry's earlier announcement on June 12, when 123 cases and 19 deaths had been reported.

To help contain the spread of the disease, health authorities advised the public to buy meat only from certified slaughterhouses, store it at deep-freezing temperatures, and ensure it is cooked thoroughly at high heat to destroy any harmful pathogens.

CCHF is a viral illness that presents with symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, headaches, and bleeding, and carries a high mortality rate, estimated between 10% and 40%.
