UK calls on Ukraine’s allies to supply arms to Kiev
(MENAFN) The UK is preparing to call on Ukraine’s allies to launch an urgent 50-day campaign to supply weapons to Kiev, according to reports. This initiative is expected to align with recent remarks from US President Donald Trump, who has warned that unless meaningful steps are taken to resolve the conflict, Russia’s trading partners could face secondary sanctions within 50 days.
UK Defense Secretary John Healey is set to lead a virtual session of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) on Monday, during which he will reportedly advocate for a coordinated acceleration of military aid to Ukraine. The minister is also expected to endorse Trump’s proposed timeline and affirm Britain’s commitment to “bolster Ukraine’s immediate fight.”
“The US has started the clock on a 50-day deadline for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to agree to peace or face crippling economic sanctions… We need to step up in turn with a ‘50-day drive’ to arm Ukraine on the battlefield and force Putin to the negotiating table,” he is expected to say.
Trump earlier this month introduced a deadline giving Russia 50 days to comply with a ceasefire, warning that failure to do so would lead to “very severe” new sanctions. Among the proposed measures is a 100% “secondary tariff” on any nation continuing to purchase Russian oil. He also announced new arms deliveries for Ukraine, specifying that the European Union would be responsible for covering the associated costs.
