WFP Condemns Israeli Attack on Aid Convoy in Gaza
(MENAFN) The World Food Program (WFP) condemned the Israeli military for opening fire on a humanitarian convoy that was transporting food supplies to northern Gaza on Sunday morning.
The organization labeled the attack as “completely unacceptable” and called for an immediate cessation of violence against civilians who are seeking life-saving assistance.
The convoy, consisting of 25 trucks, entered Gaza through the Zikim crossing, carrying essential aid, when “the surrounding crowd came under fire from Israeli tanks, snipers, and other gunfire,” as stated by the UN agency.
“These people were simply trying to access food to feed themselves and their families on the brink of starvation,” the WFP expressed in its statement.
The agency also conveyed its profound sorrow over “the loss of countless lives” and the many others who sustained life-threatening injuries.
The WFP criticized Israeli authorities for breaching prior commitments that humanitarian convoys would be free from military aggression.
“There should never, ever, be armed groups near or on our aid convoys,” the organization emphasized. “Shootings near humanitarian missions, convoys, and food distributions must stop immediately.”
The UN body further warned that unless safer conditions for aid operations are established, it might be forced to halt its delivery missions across Gaza.
“WFP teams accompanying convoys should not have to risk their own lives in the effort to save others,” the statement concluded.
