Moldova bans opposition group to partake in parliamentary elections
(MENAFN) Moldova’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) announced on Saturday that a major opposition group, known for its Euroskeptic stance, would not be allowed to take part in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Earlier in the day, hundreds of supporters from the Victory political bloc gathered outside the CEC building in protest, demanding the party be permitted to register for the vote.
Later that day, the electoral body rejected the bloc’s application, citing alleged connections to Russia and to exiled political figure Ilan Shor.
“The CEC decision is politically motivated. We will appeal it in court,” Moldovan MP and bloc representative Vasile Bolea said, according to reports.
Videos circulating online showed a large crowd of demonstrators chanting slogans such as “we demand fair elections” and “down with dictatorship,” while waving banners outside the CEC’s headquarters.
This is not the first instance of the bloc being excluded from elections. In late 2023, the CEC also denied the Victory party the ability to register its candidate for the presidential election.
