South Africa Labels Gaza Crisis as Genocide

(MENAFN) The ongoing turmoil in Gaza is “unquestionably a genocide,” according to a news agency, quoting Chrispin Phiri, spokesperson for South Africa’s Minister of International Relations.

He referenced the severity of the humanitarian disaster unfolding in the region.

Phiri made the statement shortly after a two-day conference wrapped up on Wednesday in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia.

The summit brought together representatives from nearly 24 nations. Among the attendees were Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Indonesia, Iraq, Libya, Malaysia, Namibia, Nicaragua, Oman, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and South Africa.

These countries collectively endorsed a package of six strategies designed to “restrain Israel’s assault on the Occupied Palestinian Territories.”

When questioned about the presence of Western countries like Spain, Ireland, and Norway, Phiri indicated that their involvement pointed to a “concerted effort and commitment.” Still, he emphasized that mere expressions of solidarity are not enough if not backed by action.

“International law is only as good as the states who are able to implement it,” he asserted, highlighting that failure to act on decisions from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) or the United Nations could erode faith in the world’s legal order.
