Mozambique witnesses spike in mpox virus cases
(MENAFN) Mozambique has reported a sudden increase in mpox virus cases within the last 48 hours, according to health authorities.
A report from the National Directorate of Public Health, released Tuesday, confirmed 11 new infections, though no fatalities have been recorded so far.
The northern province of Niassa appears to be the most affected, with at least five confirmed cases emerging in a matter of hours. Provincial Governor Elina Massengele noted that health teams are ramping up their efforts to contain the spread.
“We already have five cases here. We were at three, but the numbers keep on rising and there are still many people being tested with suspected cases of the disease. We have to be careful with this disease, because it’s transmissible,” she said.
In response to the outbreak in Niassa, the Health Ministry—through its National Directorate of Public Health and the National Institute of Health—has deployed a specialized technical team to the region. This group is tasked with supporting patients, tracking and isolating close contacts, enhancing surveillance measures, and raising public awareness.
