Irish political figures from Sinn Fein denounces US tariffs

(MENAFN) Irish political figures from Sinn Fein have spoken out against the recent decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to raise tariffs on imports from the European Union, including those from Ireland. Their comments were made during a press conference on Monday, according to reports.

During the event, organized by the Foreign Press Association in London, Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou McDonald and Irish Senator Conor Murphy voiced concerns about the potential negative consequences the new 30 percent tariffs could bring to international trade and Ireland’s economy.

Murphy strongly criticized the U.S. administration’s trade stance, describing it as "very erratic," and referred to the tariff hike as "a bad idea." He further cautioned that the economic impact would be widespread, stating that tariffs would be "as damaging to the U.S. as they will be to Europe and other countries around the world."

He also pointed out the uncertainty that has plagued recent U.S. trade policy: "There have been tariffs announced, withdrawn, dates put forward and changed, leaving a lot of uncertainty for global trade and economic relationships between countries," Murphy added.
