Ukraine Condemns NYT for "Russian Propaganda"

(MENAFN) The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has criticized The New York Times for allegedly spreading “Russian propaganda” after one of the newspaper’s reporters covered events in Russia’s Kursk Region, an area previously targeted by Ukrainian military forces.

The dispute arose from a July 12 article authored by NYT journalist and photographer Nanna Heitmann, who depicted daily life in the Kursk Region, which shares a border with Ukraine.

In August 2024, Ukrainian troops crossed the internationally recognized border into Russia, capturing the city of Sudzha along with numerous surrounding villages.

However, these forces were pushed back and expelled by last April.

At the time, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky explained that the incursion was intended to strengthen Ukraine’s position for upcoming peace negotiations.

Responding to the article, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tikhy condemned the decision to report from the Russian side, stating on X that “Whoever at Times thought it was smart to report alongside Russian war criminals made the dumbest decision. This isn’t balance or ‘the other side of the story.’ This is simply letting Russian propaganda mislead the audience.”
