China Gears Up to Host SCO Foreign Ministers Summit

(MENAFN) China is set to convene foreign ministers from member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Tuesday, according to an official announcement.

The high-level diplomatic gathering will be held in the northern city of Tianjin and will include top diplomats from Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus, along with senior officials from the SCO’s permanent institutions.

"Parties will exchange views on SCO cooperation in various fields and major international and regional issues," the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated on Saturday.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Beijing on Sunday ahead of the summit, while the remaining ministers are expected to touch down on Monday.

This follows last month’s SCO Defense Ministers' Meeting, which China hosted in Qingdao. That event ended without a unified declaration, as Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh declined to endorse the bloc’s final communique.

Founded in 2001, the SCO is a regional intergovernmental body composed of 10 nations: China, Russia, India, Iran, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus.
