Trump suggests DOGE to probe Musk
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has called for Elon Musk to be investigated by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) over claims the billionaire has excessively benefited from federal subsidies. Trump’s comments come amid a growing feud between the two, following Musk’s resignation last month as head of DOGE over disputes regarding the president’s $5 trillion budget plan.
Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has fiercely criticized Trump’s “big, beautiful” budget bill, arguing it undermines efforts to reduce government spending. On Tuesday, as the Senate began voting on amendments to the 940-page legislation, Musk blasted lawmakers who supported the plan, warning they could face primary defeats.
He also renewed calls for the creation of a new political movement, the “America Party,” as an alternative to what he described as the corrupt bipartisan “uniparty.”
Responding on Truth Social, Trump accused Musk of hypocrisy, suggesting his companies rely heavily on government aid. “Elon may get more subsidy than any human in history,” Trump wrote, adding that without such support, Musk would “probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.”
Trump implied DOGE should investigate Musk’s federal funding, claiming cutting those subsidies could save the US “a FORTUNE.”
The president also reiterated his longstanding opposition to electric vehicle mandates, which he says Musk always knew, despite previously endorsing Trump. While he doesn’t oppose EVs outright, Trump stressed, “not everyone should be forced to own one.”
