U.S. Lawmakers Push for Response to Haiti Crisis
(MENAFN) On Wednesday, two American legislators presented a bipartisan bill aimed at tackling the worsening humanitarian and security issues in Haiti.
Representatives Gregory Meeks and Greg Murphy unveiled the Strategy to Address Key Priorities Affecting Security and Empowerment in Haiti Act, also referred to as the SAK PASE Act.
This legislation mandates the U.S. State Department to devise and execute a detailed strategy that addresses the escalating crisis in the country while backing a Haitian-led effort toward long-term peace.
Representative Meeks emphasized the critical situation, stating, "The level of human suffering in Haiti is completely unacceptable, and we need a comprehensive strategy to address it."
His colleague, Representative Murphy, added that maintaining safety in Haiti and the wider Caribbean is closely linked to safeguarding U.S. national interests.
Under this proposed law, Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be obligated to present a full-fledged strategy to Congress within 90 days of the bill becoming law.
The plan would focus on combating gang violence and fostering stability throughout the nation.
Haiti has endured prolonged instability due to rampant gang activities and political chaos, which intensified following the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise.
A multinational security mission led by Kenya and backed by the United Nations has struggled to restore order, with an estimated 90 percent of Port-au-Prince now dominated by armed criminal factions.
According to the UN, approximately 5.5 million Haitians are expected to need humanitarian aid in 2024—an increase from 5.2 million the previous year—highlighting the urgent need for international and domestic intervention.
