Extreme Weather Cuts Power, Disrupts Flights Across Southeastern Australia

(MENAFN) Heavy rain and fierce winds have plunged thousands of Australians into darkness, while flight disruptions have spread across the state of New South Wales, media reported on Wednesday.

The central and southern coastal areas of New South Wales were slammed by a low-pressure system, unleashing powerful winds and torrential downpours, according to media.

In response, authorities issued urgent flash flood warnings for multiple regions. The strong winds wreaked havoc on the power grid, leaving approximately 35,000 homes and businesses without electricity.

Sydney Airport was also affected by the adverse weather, with over a dozen domestic flights canceled or delayed. Several international flights to destinations such as New Zealand, China, and India were also disrupted, media added.

Water NSW issued a warning that the Warragamba Dam is nearing full capacity, predicting a moderate spill overnight. Smaller dams in Sydney, including Cataract, Nepean, Cordeaux, Avon, and Woronora, have already started spilling water overnight.

The severe weather continues to batter New South Wales, adding to a string of damaging incidents on Australia’s east coast earlier this year.

In May, authorities reported that record flooding in New South Wales damaged 10,000 properties, affecting around 50,000 people and claiming five lives.
