North Korean Military Delegation Heads to Russia
(MENAFN) A group from North Korea’s top military academy has departed for Russia as defense ties between the two nations deepen, according to reports from state media on Tuesday.
The delegation, led by Kim Kum-chol, the president of Kim Il Sung Military University, left Pyongyang the day before to pay a visit to the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, a news outlet stated.
Although no official explanation was given for the delegation’s journey, it seems intended to enhance interaction and cooperation between the military educational institutions of North Korea and Russia.
This event follows closely on the heels of Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu’s recent visit to Pyongyang, marking his second trip there in under two weeks.
Kim Kum-chol last traveled to Russia in July 2024, shortly after North Korea and Russia inked a mutual defense agreement the previous month.
According to a news agency, Kim was included among North Korean figures sanctioned by the United States in December last year, linked to North Korea’s support of Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.
Kim Il Sung Military University, named after North Korea’s late founder, serves as a training center for military officers.
In a related report, North Korea’s state television broadcast images showing leader Kim Jong Un expressing grief over soldiers believed to have died in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
