Syria Refutes Assassination Attempt Claims on President Sharaa
(MENAFN) Syria on Sunday dismissed media claims suggesting that President Ahmad al-Sharaa had narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a recent visit to the southern province of Daraa.
“There is no truth in circulated media reports claiming that the Syrian army and Turkish intelligence had thwarted an assassination attempt on President Sharaa during his visit to Daraa,” a ministry source told a local news agency.
While the news agency relayed the government's denial, it offered no further specifics regarding the alleged plot.
President Sharaa assumed leadership in January, heading a transitional government formed in the wake of Bashar al-Assad’s ouster. Assad, who had ruled Syria for nearly a quarter of a century, fled to Russia in December, marking the collapse of Baath Party control that had dominated Syrian politics since 1963.
