Ukraine Sees Potential for Patriot Missile Deal
(MENAFN) Ukraine might genuinely secure five Patriot missile defense units produced in the United States, based on US President Donald Trump’s ambiguous yet not unfavorable statements at a NATO gathering in The Hague, according to former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ohryzko on Friday.
“Trump did not say ‘no,’ and that’s already better than a clear refusal,” Ohryzko informed the National News Agency of Ukraine, or Ukrinform.
He indicated that this presents a chance for Ukraine to strengthen its efforts to acquire the Patriots, potentially via a purchase arrangement.
“This is an extremely important signal,” he stated. “We need to do everything we can to support this initiative and create a political background that makes it beneficial for Trump to go ahead with it.”
Ohryzko suggested that if the United States hesitates, Ukraine’s international partners could intervene. “Even if the US, for political reasons, at some stage does not want to directly supply us with weapons, they can do so indirectly -- through European partners,” he mentioned, highlighting the adaptable nature of such deals.
He also commended the summit’s move to lower restrictions on arms manufacturing, describing it as a significant advancement for Ukraine’s military industry.
These comments followed the White House’s refusal to address reports about renewed discussions involving Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding the Patriots, citing confidentiality concerns.
