China Sets New Green Energy Record With Solar And Wind Power Surge In May
The achievement comes as a result of China's rapid and large-scale investments in green infrastructure over recent years. In May alone, China installed 93 gigawatts of solar capacity, the equivalent of roughly 100 solar panels being installed every second. In the same month, an additional 26 gigawatts worth of wind turbines were also installed.
While the actual power output from solar panels and wind turbines depends on weather conditions, energy experts say the installations in May alone could generate enough electricity to meet the entire energy demands of countries like Poland, Sweden, or the United Arab Emirates.

Between January and May 2025, China produced 198 gigawatts of electricity from solar and 46 gigawatts from wind, a combined output sufficient to meet the power needs of Indonesia or Türkiye.
Lauri Myllyvirta of the Asia Society Policy Institute commented, "We already knew that China was investing heavily in solar and wind power, but the scale of this recent progress is truly staggering."
For the first time, China's total installed solar capacity has surpassed 1,000 gigawatts, roughly equivalent to 50% of the world's total solar capacity.
China's rapid expansion in renewable energy is part of its broader effort to combat climate change. Despite being one of the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases, China is also the leading nation in both supplying and implementing clean energy technology and projects.
