Russia Unveils Plan to Launch National Messaging App

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Tuesday mandating the creation of a nationwide messaging platform, aiming for its widespread adoption—especially within public sector institutions, media outlets reported.

The country’s Digital Development Ministry confirmed it is spearheading the development of this domestic messaging service, citing security concerns associated with widely used platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram.

According to Russian media, the new app may be modeled after China’s multifunctional WeChat and could potentially be built upon Max, a messaging application developed by Russian tech firm VK.

Plans indicate the app will come pre-installed on all new smartphones sold across Russia. Furthermore, its use will be compulsory in government offices and public institutions once launched.
