(MENAFN) Vietnam’s National Assembly gave the green light on Tuesday to an updated Nationality Law that simplifies how overseas Vietnamese and foreign experts can obtain or reclaim Vietnamese citizenship, according to the local media.

The newly amended legislation opens the door for foreigners and stateless persons who have lived in Vietnam for a minimum of five years and can financially support themselves to qualify for citizenship.

Applicants are required to respect Vietnam’s constitution and laws, honor local traditions and culture, and demonstrate adequate Vietnamese language skills to facilitate social integration.

However, the law introduces exemptions from language, residency, and financial requirements for individuals who have close family ties to Vietnamese citizens—such as spouses, children, parents, or grandparents—have made notable contributions to the country, or whose citizenship is considered advantageous to the state.

Nguyen Hai Ninh, Minister of Justice, emphasized the benefits of the reform, stating that the revised law offers improved opportunities for foreign investors, experts, and scientists to acquire Vietnamese citizenship, thereby supporting the attraction of top-tier talent to the nation.
