Japan Plans Evacuating Citizens from Middle East
(MENAFN) Japan is dispatching a pair of military aircraft to East Africa in anticipation of a potential mission to remove its citizens from the Middle East, where hostilities between Iran and Israel are rapidly escalating, Defence Minister Gen Nakatani said Thursday.
The two C 2 transport planes belonging to the Self Defense Forces (SDF), each carrying roughly 120 personnel, will proceed to an SDF installation in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa and remain on alert there, a Tokyo based news agency reported.
This measure was adopted after a formal request from Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya.
The aircraft are expected to depart Japan on Saturday.
"The situation in the Middle East has become more strained as Israel and Iran continue tit-for-tat attacks," Nakatani said.
He emphasized that the administration "is still at the preparatory stage for a possible transportation" of Japanese citizens.
Officials are now verifying how many of the approximately 280 Japanese nationals in Iran and 1,000 in Israel wish to leave those countries.
Tokyo is also arranging to bus about 90 nationals and their relatives from Iran’s capital, Tehran, to neighbouring Azerbaijan, while offering those based in Israel the option of coach travel to Jordan.
