Chad suspends US citizens visa in response to American travel ban
(MENAFN) Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby has ordered a halt to issuing visas for American citizens, acting in direct response to the United States' decision to bar entry to Chadian nationals. The move follows a sweeping executive order signed by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, which enforces a full travel ban on citizens from 12 countries, including Chad, citing national security concerns, weak deportation cooperation, and visa overstay issues.
In a statement shared on Facebook Thursday, Deby declared his government would apply the principle of reciprocity.
“I have instructed the government to act in accordance with the principles of reciprocity and suspend the granting of visas to citizens of the United States of America,” he wrote.
“Chad has neither planes to offer nor billions of dollars to give, but Chad has its dignity and its pride,” Deby added.
The US restrictions, which take effect June 9, also apply to countries such as Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and others. Additional partial limitations will impact travelers from nations like Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, and Venezuela. Certain groups, including dual nationals, lawful residents, diplomats, athletes, and relatives involved in adoption cases, will be exempt.
