South African President defends BEE policy
(MENAFN) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered a strong defense of the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy on Friday, directly addressing critics and questioning whether their opposition stems from “fear or envy.” Speaking at the Black Business Council’s annual summit gala dinner in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to driving economic transformation.
Ramaphosa emphasized that BEE remains essential for addressing the country’s entrenched economic disparities and achieving inclusive development. He also reiterated the administration’s intention to initiate a national dialogue to confront pressing social and economic challenges—a step he views as critical for building a more sustainable and equitable society.
”Fundamental economic transformation is vital to the growth of our economy and the progress of our nation. This transformation is necessary if we are to unlock the capabilities of all our people and realise the full potential of our economy,” he said.
He further noted that lasting progress would only be achieved through genuine structural reforms and inclusive governance, citing the proposed Government of National Unity (GNU) as a potential vehicle for unified advancement.
