Teacher assistant gets killed by student in France
(MENAFN) Authorities in Haute-Marne have reported that a middle school student in France carried out a deadly knife attack on a teaching assistant during a routine bag inspection on Tuesday. The injured educator was urgently taken to the hospital but later passed away due to her injuries. In addition, a police officer involved in subduing the 14-year-old assailant sustained injuries during the incident, according to reports from local sources present at the scene.
This tragic event has occurred amidst growing alarm over the rise of knife-related violence across the country. In response, French law enforcement has intensified random bag searches in schools as a preventive measure against similar attacks.
Local police detailed in a statement that, “a student pulled out a knife and seriously injured a teaching assistant,” during bag checks at Dolto Middle School in Nogent. They added, “the attacker, neutralized by the police officers present at the scene, is currently in police custody at the Nogent gendarmerie.”
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the incident on social media, describing it as part of “a senseless wave of violence.”
The victim leaves behind a young son, and French Prime Minister François Bayrou expressed his condolences on social media, writing, “our thoughts go out to her little boy, his family, his loved ones, and the entire educational community.”
Bayrou further highlighted the growing danger posed by bladed weapons among youth, stating, “the threat of bladed weapons among our children has become critical.” He emphasized the need to treat the issue as “a public enemy.”
Following a deadly mass stabbing at a private school in Nantes earlier this year—where a teenage girl was killed and three others injured—Bayrou had called for “more intensive checks around and inside schools” to prevent such tragedies.
