(MENAFN) Unseasonal torrential rains battered Angola’s northern Uige province for three consecutive days, leaving at least two children dead and thousands without electricity, a local media outlet reported Wednesday.

The rainfall, rare for the dry season, brought strong winds and hail, catching communities unprepared. According to Antonio Simao, deputy provincial commander of the Service for Civil Protection and Firefighters, the fatalities occurred in the towns of Damba and Uige.

According to Simao, the fatalities took place in the towns of Damba and Uige, where a sudden downpour—marked by wind and hail—caught residents by surprise, an uncommon event during the dry season.

Since Tuesday, the severe weather has left more than 2,000 families across the region without electricity, the media outlet confirmed.

In addition to widespread power outages, the storm caused significant structural damage. Portions of the Uige General Hospital were destroyed, along with school facilities and several vehicles parked on nearby streets, according to the media outlet.
