Tottenham Terminates Contract of Coach Postecoglou
(MENAFN) Tottenham Hotspur revealed on Friday that it has terminated the contract of head coach Ange Postecoglou, attributing the decision to disappointing domestic performances despite notable success on the European stage.
In an official release, the club explained, “Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.”
At 58 years old, Postecoglou guided Spurs to their first silverware in 17 years, capturing the UEFA Europa League trophy on May 21. This achievement made him only the third manager in the club’s history to secure a European title.
The club expressed its appreciation: “We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club.” “Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy.”
Despite these accomplishments, Tottenham floundered in the Premier League throughout Postecoglou’s tenure. The 2023-24 season ended with the team in 17th place — the lowest league finish in the club’s history. Over the span of 38 league matches that season, Spurs secured just 11 wins and amassed a mere 78 points across their previous 66 Premier League games.
The statement continued, “Following a positive start in the 2023–24 Premier League season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season.” “The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place.”
