Trump administration sends migrants to Guantanamo Bay
(MENAFN) The Trump administration is preparing to relocate as many as 9,000 undocumented migrants to the US detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as early as this week, according to reports.
Officials revealed that the group of migrants potentially slated for transfer includes individuals from Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Haiti, Ireland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Türkiye, and Ukraine.
Currently, around 500 migrants have been detained at Guantanamo since February. However, sources familiar with the situation indicated that the facility is being prepared for medical evaluations of up to 9,000 people to assess whether they are healthy enough for transfer.
The Guantanamo Bay detention center has a controversial reputation, stemming from its use after the September 11, 2001 attacks, when numerous individuals suspected of terrorism were detained there by US forces.
In January, Leader Donald Trump declared his intention to utilize the facility to process undocumented migrants. Transfers could begin as soon as Wednesday, with plans to hold detainees at Guantanamo Bay temporarily before returning them to their countries of origin.
