South Korean Fighter Aircraft Crashes During Exercises in Alaska
(MENAFN) A South Korean KF-16 fighter jet sustained damage during joint air exercises with the United States in Alaska, according to a media report released on Wednesday, citing the South Korean military.
The mishap took place during takeoff at Eielson Air Force Base as part of the ongoing Red Flag Alaska drills. Officials have not yet revealed the full extent of the aircraft’s damage.
An emergency prompted both pilots aboard the twin-seat jet to eject at 9:02 a.m. South Korean time (0002 GMT). They were confirmed to be unharmed following the incident.
"The two pilots are safe and are being transferred to a nearby hospital," the country’s Air Force said in a statement.
Authorities from both South Korea and the United States will jointly investigate the cause of the incident.
This year, Seoul deployed 11 aircraft to participate in the Red Flag-Alaska exercises.
The incident follows a separate military aviation tragedy on May 29, when a South Korean navy surveillance plane crashed domestically, resulting in the deaths of all four service members on board.
