Mexico Appeals to U.S. for Tariff Exemption
(MENAFN) Mexico is currently awaiting a reply from the United States regarding its formal appeal to be excluded from the recently imposed 50 percent tariff on steel and aluminum imports, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard announced Tuesday.
The appeal was submitted last Friday following U.S. President Donald Trump’s June 3 executive order, which doubled tariffs on these metals from all countries except Britain.
During a recent visit to Washington, Mexico’s delegation laid out critical arguments to U.S. officials, emphasizing that the United States actually holds a trade surplus with Mexico in steel, calling the tariff “highly questionable.”
The Mexican team also sought parity with Britain’s exemption, cautioning that the steep tariffs could trigger significant economic repercussions on both sides of the border due to the deep industrial interconnection.
"We're waiting for their response," Ebrard stated.
