Trapped South African Miners Survive After Accident
(MENAFN) Close to 300 workers were brought to safety on Friday after being stranded underground in a South African gold mine due to a shaft-related problem that took place the day before.
According to a statement from the Johannesburg-headquartered mining company, "Sibanye-Stillwater can confirm that all 260 employees have safely returned to surface following the shaft incident at Kloof-seven on May 22."
The company emphasized that "at no point was there any risk of injury to employees during the incident which occurred when the skip door of the Kloof-seven sub-shaft rock winder opened at the loading point level-39, impacting levels 40, 41 and below."
Before the miners could be securely brought back above ground, the company conducted thorough safety evaluations and examined the shaft’s structural condition. Essential fixes were also completed to ensure a secure retrieval process.
