Ukraine Wants Zelensky, Putin Direct Talks
(MENAFN) Ukraine has expressed a willingness for a direct meeting between its Leader, Vladimir Zelensky, and Russian Leader Vladimir Putin, according to statements made by the Ukrainian foreign minister, Andrey Sibiga.
This development highlights Kyiv’s interest in engaging in dialogue at the highest level to help resolve the ongoing conflict with Moscow.
Speaking recently, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked that a face-to-face meeting between the two presidents is “possible.”
However, he emphasized that such talks could only occur once negotiators from both nations—Moscow and Kyiv—have reached “certain agreements” aimed at settling the hostilities.
In an interview with a news agency, Sibiga was asked about Kyiv’s stance on an invitation from Pope Leo XIV to continue peace discussions at the Vatican.
These negotiations had resumed last week in Istanbul, Türkiye, after a hiatus of three years.
Sibiga confirmed, “I can confirm to you that proposals to organize possible contacts, including at the level of leaders, were made by the Vatican.”
Sibiga further stated that Ukraine is open to “consider potential venues for such a meeting,” referencing the idea of direct talks between Putin and Zelensky.
This suggests that Kyiv is prepared to examine all diplomatic options for progressing toward a peaceful resolution.
Additionally, the foreign minister noted that Zelensky is interested in meeting with U.S. Leader Donald Trump, reflecting Ukraine’s desire to maintain strong international alliances during this critical time.
Earlier this month, Leader Putin proposed that both sides participate in unconditional direct talks in Istanbul on May 15.
In response, Zelensky indicated his willingness to travel to Türkiye but underlined that he would only be willing to engage directly with the Russian leader himself—who, notably, has not indicated any intention of attending the discussions in person.
