Brunei Reports Surge in Women Joining Tech Sector
(MENAFN) Brunei has experienced a rise in the number of women entering professional roles within the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. Women accounted for nearly 34 percent of the ICT workforce in 2024, marking a 4 percent increase from 2020, a government official announced.
In a statement released Monday by the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, Minister Pengiran Shamhary Mustapha highlighted this development on May 16, noting it reflects an upward trend in women’s involvement in both social and economic spheres. His remarks were made in recognition of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD).
WTISD is observed globally each year on May 17, with this year’s theme being "Gender Equality in Digital Transformation."
The minister emphasized Brunei’s acknowledgment of ICT's significant role in enabling broader community involvement, including that of women and girls. He noted that, with the appropriate access and digital skills, they can contribute meaningfully to societal and familial progress.
Brunei, a resource-rich nation situated in northern Borneo, has a population of 455,500, with females making up 47.2 percent—or approximately 214,800 people—according to data from the Ministry of Finance and Economy.
