(MENAFN) Authorities in Brazil's southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul, initiated the placement of roadblocks on Sunday in an effort to control a recent outbreak of avian influenza at a commercial poultry farm located in Montenegro.

Eduardo Leite, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, has mandated the establishment of seven sanitary checkpoints. These barriers will operate around the clock within a 3 to 10 kilometer zone surrounding the infected farm to inspect and sanitize vehicles, with a particular focus on freight trucks, as a precaution against further spread of the virus.

Teams from the national animal health surveillance and defense department have commenced inspections of rural properties within a 10-kilometer radius of the outbreak's center. These patrols aim to monitor all cargo vehicles, including those transporting food and milk through the affected region.

Brazil's agriculture ministry has stated that current information indicates no contamination of eggs and that all necessary steps have been taken to safeguard the poultry industry.
