(MENAFN) The president of Bulgaria has disclosed that the matter of holding a public vote on joining the eurozone will be submitted to the judicial system, after the Speaker of Parliament declined to permit a vote on his suggestion, according to press coverage on Friday.

Rumen Radev stated that he plans to approach the Constitutional Court after Speaker Natalia Kiselova refused to advance his initiative for a referendum regarding Bulgaria's planned accession to the eurozone in 2026, as per a news agency.

While addressing reporters at Sofia Airport, Radev stressed that all citizens of Bulgaria should have the opportunity to voice their opinions on whether the country is prepared to embrace the euro.

Earlier in the week, the head of state put forward a proposal for a nationwide vote, asking Bulgarians whether they back adopting the euro in 2026.

"The referendum will serve as a corrective for Bulgarian democracy. It will give people a voice and allow all arguments to be heard. It will offer the political class a chance to restore dialogue with voters and to fight for their trust — a trust that has been lost in recent years," he said.

Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova also reacted to the initiative, stating that eurozone integration is crucial to ensuring Bulgaria’s financial and economic resilience, particularly in the face of persistent global volatility.
