UN strongly advices India, Pakistan to exhibit ‘maximum restraint’

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for India and Pakistan to avoid a military confrontation, urging both nations to exercise "maximum restraint" and prevent the situation from escalating further. His appeal came ahead of a closed-door UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting focused on the escalating tensions in South Asia, which Pakistan had requested. Guterres emphasized the importance of stepping back from the brink of conflict and finding peaceful solutions.

The UNSC meeting, which lasted approximately 90 minutes, did not result in a formal statement. However, according to reports from Indian news agency ANI, council members questioned Pakistan about its involvement in the April terrorist attack in Kashmir that killed 26 people. The UNSC reportedly rejected Pakistan's "false flag" narrative and inquired whether Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terrorist group with known links to Pakistan, was involved in the attack.

Pakistan's UN Ambassador, Asim Iftikhar, stated that his country had voiced its concerns about India's actions in the council. He also criticized India’s decision to suspend the long-standing Indus Waters Treaty, which regulates water sharing between the two countries, calling it a violation of international law.

Following the attack, India and Pakistan have exchanged fire for 12 consecutive days. The Indian Army reported continued ceasefire violations by Pakistan, including unprovoked small-arms fire from posts along the Line of Control, the de facto border in Kashmir.
