Rising Violence Forces Mass Displacement in Sudan
(MENAFN) Tens of thousands of individuals have been compelled to escape an internally displaced persons (IDP) settlement in Zamzam, situated in Sudan's North Darfur region, due to a recent surge in conflict and instability, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Tuesday.
Based on data from the IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), early assessments suggest that somewhere between 60,000 and 80,000 families were uprooted over the course of Sunday and Monday.
The majority of those affected are still located within the Al Fasher region, though many others have moved towards the Tawila and Dar As Salam districts, the agency noted.
The IOM emphasized that these statistics are "preliminary," and highlighted that the overall situation remains "tense and highly fluid," with continued displacement and changing circumstances on the ground.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched their most recent assault on El Fasher on May 10, 2024, despite global alerts about the potential for escalating conflict in the city.
El Fasher is a critical hub for humanitarian aid across all five Darfur states.
Since April 15, 2023, the RSF has been engaged in a fierce struggle with the Sudanese military over national control, leading to a death toll in the thousands and creating one of the gravest humanitarian emergencies worldwide.
